Suzuki Kiitsu’s Mountain Stream of Summer and Autumn

Flowering Plants and Stream of Summer and Autumn by Suzuki Kiitsu

Summer
Autumn

It is a masterpiece of Suzuki Kiitsu (1796–1858) depicting the flowing stream and the plants in the mountain. The works of Tawaraya Sōtatsu (1570-1643), the founder of the Rimpa School, are full of rich beauty. The picture of Ogata Kōrin (1658-1716) respected by Kiitsu is gorgeous. The picture of Sakai Hōitsu (1761-1828), the master of Kiitsu, is delicate. “Flowering Plants and Stream of Summer and Autumn” does not belong to any of them. It is a picture with a very strong expression of color contrast. He gave a clear form to the unshaped stream of water. His personality is expressed in the artificial beauty of nature.

The outlines of the green moss shake nervously, and the black shadow of the rocks are creepy. It can be said that this expression method is closer to the ukiyo-e prints of Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) and Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861) rather than the framework of the Rinpa School.
