Shinhanga (New Style Woodblock Printing)

Ukiyo-e received high artistic acclaim overseas but declined domestically. Worried about this situation, Watanabe Shōzaburō (1885-1962), an ukiyo-e merchant, developed “Shinhanga (new style woodblock printing) Movement ” aiming at the revival and modernization of traditional woodblock prints as the publisher. Through the division of works among painters, carvers, and printers, each individual’s skills were fully demonstrated, and many fine and beautiful prints were created.
