Ichikawa Ebizo IV in the role of Takemura Sadanoshin




It is a Kabuki play performed in May 1794, in which the main character of Dojo-ji Temple, Takemura Sadanoshin, is depicted. Ichikawa Ebizo, who played Sadanoshin, was known as Ichikawa Danjuro V and was praised as the greatest actor of the day. he actor’s large physique, well‐defined features and, rich facial expression convey his dignified appearance. In addition, Sadanoshin’s face, the lines of the collar and Kamishimo (samurai costume), and the crossed fingers skillfully produced a rhythmical and stable composition.
