1. 春たちて まだ九日の 野山哉

Haru tachite/ Mada kokonoka no/ Noyama kana

Passed the first day of spring,

It’s only nine days

On the hills and fields.

2. 花の雲  鐘は上野か  浅草か

Hana no kumo/ Kane ha Ueno ka Asakusa ka

A cloudy day during the cherry blossom season.

I hear the sound of bell

At Ueno or Asakusa.

3. 春もやや  気色ととのふ  月と梅

Haru moya ya/ Keshiki totonou/ Tsuki to ume

The spring haze.

The scent is already in the air.

The moon and ume blossoms.

4. 闇の夜や 巣をまどはして 鳴く鵆

Yami no yo ya/ Su wo madowashite/ Naku chidori

In the dark night,

Losing sight of the nest,

The plover cries.

5. 麦飯に やつるる恋か 猫の妻

Mugimeshi ni/ Yatsururu koi ka/ Neko no tsuma

As the boiled barley and rice,

And worn out with the love,

The wife of a cat.

6. 鶯や 餅に糞する 縁の先

Uguisu ya/ Mochi ni fun suru/ En no saki

The bush warbler

Drops on a rice cake

On the veranda.

7. 梅白し 昨日ふや靏を 盗まれし

Ume shiroshi/ Kinou ya tsuruwo/ Nusumareshi

The white ume blossom.

Yesterday, the cranes

Were stolen.

8. 旅人の 心にも似よ 椎の花

Tabibito no/ Kokoro nimo niyo/ Shii no hana

Resemble to

The mind of a traveler,

The flower of chinquapin

9. 馬ぼくぼく 我を絵に見る 夏野かな

Uma bokuboku/ Ware wo e ni miru/ Natsuno kana

The horse trudge around.

I found myself in the paint.

It’s summer fields.

10. 瓜作る 君があれなと 夕涼み

Uri tsukuru/ Kimi ga arena to/ Yusuzumi

I wish you were here,

You was used to make gourds.

I feel the cool of the evening alone.

11. 秋の夜を 打ち崩したる 咄かな

Aki no yo wo/ Uchikuzushitaru/ Hanashi kana

In the autumn night,

Pleasant chats

Breaking into

12. 詠むるや 江戸には稀な 山の月

Nagamuru ya/ Edo niha marena/ Yama no tsuki

I stare at,

Rarely seen in Edo,

The moon in the mountain.

13. 鷹の目も 今や暮れぬと 鳴く鶉

Taka no me mo/ Imaya kurenu to/ Naku uzura

The eyes of hawks

Would be in the dark,

The quai crys.

14. 白髪抜く 枕の下や きりぎりす

Shiraga nuku/ Makura no shita ya/ Kirigirisu

I pull out the gray hairs,

And under my pillow,

There is a cricket.

15. 紫陽花や 藪を小庭の 別座敷

Azisai ya/ Yabu wo koniwa no/ Betsu-zashiki

The hydrangeas,

And the thicket is for the small garden.

The another house is here.

16. 人々を しぐれよ宿は 寒くとも

Hitobito wo/ Shigureyo yado wa/ Samuku tomo

I wish chilly rain falls

On the people

Even the house is in the cold air.

17. 初雪や 聖小僧が 笈の色

Hatsu-yuki ya/ Hijiri-kozo ga/ Oi no iro

The first snow

The young Hijiri-monk’s face

Turn to the color of the wooden box.

18. 雪と雪 今宵師走の 名月か

Yki to yuki/ Koyoi shiwasu no/ Meigetsu ya

The snow and snow.

This evenining would have

The great moon of December .

19. こがらしや 頬腫痛む 人の顔

Kogarashi ya/ Hoobare itamu/ Hito no kao

The wintry wind.

People’s swelling cheeks with

The throbbing pains.

20. せつかれて 年忘れする 機嫌かな

Setsukarete/ Toshi-wasure suru/ Kigen kana

Being badgered,

I join the year-end party
